8. Try plugging the pump into another electrical outlet.

Sometimes these outlets that are exposed to considerable humidity near a pump or well sump do not work because the connections corrode. I replaced a sump pump because it appeared to fail during an extreme weather event (10 inches of rain in 24 hrs). It turns out the pump was fine and the outlet was the problem (also check the circuit breaker).
