New Orleans Council moves toward special election in clerk of court fight [View all]

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The New Orleans City Council has called a special meeting Monday to appoint an interim Orleans clerk of court and call a special election for the newly created position.

The meeting is set for noon Monday, May 11, according to a letter from Council President JP Morrell. The meeting will focus on appointing someone to temporarily assume the duties of the vacant Orleans clerk of court office and issuing a proclamation ordering a special election.

The new office was created by Act 15, formerly Senate Bill 256, which eliminated the offices of Orleans Parish clerk of civil district court and Orleans Parish clerk of criminal district court and merged them into a single Orleans clerk of court position.

The council said it is acting on the advice of executive counsel and the city attorney, in consultation with the Moreno administration, to “uphold the sanctity of the people’s votes” and create a path for voters to decide who will hold the newly created office.
