Starbucks lays off nearly 1,000 employees in Seattle and Kent [View all]

Starbucks Corp. (Nasdaq: SBUX) is moving ahead with plans to shrink its workforce amid a turnaround effort. The Seattle coffee giant disclosed in a state filing Thursday it will lay off 974 employees in Seattle and Kent.

The move comes after CEO Brian Niccol said in a public message to employees Sept. 25 that the company planned to cut 900 "non-retail partner roles" and close many open positions.

The layoffs are part of the company's $1 billion "Back to Starbucks" restructuring plan, for which the company also permanently closed roughly 1%, or more than 400, of its North American stores at the end of September, including nearly two dozen in the Seattle area.

The cuts are the second layoff filing in the last week from Starbucks in Washington state. The Business Journal reported Tuesday on the company's 369 layoffs, which were related to store closures. Both layoff filings list a Dec. 5 separation date.

Maybe people have figured out it costs less to make your own coffee.
