8. My grandfather retired soon after the first moon landing.

His aerospace career began when he joined the Army and they trained him to be an aircraft mechanic. That was in the days of biplanes and open cockpits.

As World War II was brewing the Army realized they'd need aircraft engineers and sent him to college to get a degree. He never spoke about the war but he came out of it with a knack for working with metals like titanium that were then considered exotic.
