It was a huge miscalculation clearly. What ended up happening was not what was planned. It was to be essentially an in and out hostage-taking endeavour. Hamas did not plan for the scenario that unfolded at the supposedly highly-guarded border, and then later when it was overrun by Gaza civilians while the IDF was nowhere to be found. There were crimes of opportunity and it was a bloodbath and horrific. But planned as such, knowing it would lead to the destruction of Palestine? No.
