Could this nonsense turn into the metaphorical zombie apocalypse or nuclear annihilation?
Possibly. But if that happens, we unwashed masses are doomed anyway.
It's more likely, in my opinion, that we have the same stupid shit we've been dealing with, just more of it.
I'm not really a prepper, but my household approaches the coming bad times with more of the Scout Motto attitude and the Church of LDS pragmatism.
I'd definitely be maintaining buffers in case there is an interruption in utilities and the distribution of supplies. Having an alternative local heating source in the winter has always been good practice. Toiletries are easy enough to stockpile, and a plan to acquire, or a supply of, fresh water is important.
Interruptions in medical supplies are also a problem.
