Yes, the US recognizes UNESCO as a legitimate entity, though the relationship has been politically turbulent.

The US is a founding member of UNESCO, and formally rejoined as the 194th member state in July 2023. However, the US has withdrawn from the organization twice, most recently in 2025.

It's true that United States first withdrew from UNESCO on December 31, 1984.
The withdrawal was announced a year earlier by the Reagan administration in December 1983, citing concerns over the organization's perceived politicization, poor management, and anti-Western biases.

The U.S. rejoined the organization nearly two decades later in October 2003.

The fact that the US was a founding member for 39 years stands as proof of US commitment to UNESCO's international standing. Americans would go apoplectic if this administration made even one move to remove it, nevermind New York, which was the first capital of the United States.

This bogus threat-drama simply makes this administration look unworthy as international leaders.
