But given that we are 6 months from his replacement being seated regardless, I think the best we could hope for would be to just not fill it at all until then.

Getting that seat for a few months wouldn't really change the math of the Senate other than take 1 vote away from R's, which would be that same if it were filled with a Democrat or just empty. Republicans would still need 50 votes for anything, which they still need now.
